about

Hrubá Skála, Bohemian Paradise, Czechia

Humans are known to have settled in the region of what is now Czechia by the lower Palaeolithic 2.5mil-300,000BP. Several cultures settled including the Acheulean, Micoquien, Mousterian, and Aurgnacian. It is also home to the oldest known ceramic articles in the world, including the Venus of Dolní. Věstonice. From the 5th century until the 2nd century the Celts called Boii settled, and gave the region the name “Boiohaemum” which means “the home of the Boii”. From about the 1st contrary Germanic tribes Marcamanni, Quadi, and Lmbards settled and drove out the celts and the Germanic towns are desired on the Map of Ptolemaios. West Slavic tribes settled in the area and formed a principality in the 9th century, part of Great Moravia, Duchy of Bohemia and later Kingdom of Bohemia. The country would also be later invaded many times, gaining independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, included German Occupation from 1938-1945, and the Soviet Invasion in 1968 and then peaceful dissolution into the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1993. Changing name, and boundaries seemingly constantly across its history.

A country to have much changing lands, rulers, and invasions, it is also the home of some pretty bad ass ladies. ‘The Maidens’ War’ is the tale in Bohemian tradition about an uprising of women against the men who looked to take away their powers. The uprising was led by Vlasta the story goes “Šárka, Vlasta's lieutenant, entrapped a band of armed men led by Ctirad by tying herself to a tree and claiming that the rebel maidens had tied her there and put a horn and a jug of mead out of reach to mock her. Ctirad believed her story and untied her from the tree, whereupon she poured mead for the men as a celebratory thank-you gift. Little did the men know that Šárka and the maidens had put a sleeping potion into the mead. When all the men had fallen asleep, Šárka blew the horn as a signal for the rebel maidens to come out of their hiding places and join her in slaughtering the men. Ctirad was captured and then tortured to death in Děvín. The valley where it happened is today called Divoká Šárka (Wild Šárka).” (Wikipedia)
Unfortunately the men won the war and their castle Děvín was burned. The land was again ruled by men. What a shame.

Ptolemy's world map, reconstituted from Ptolemy's Geography (circa 150) in the 15th century, indicating "Sinae" (China) at the extreme right, beyond the island of "Taprobane" (Ceylon or Sri Lanka, oversized) and the "Aurea Chersonesus" (Southeast Asian peninsula).

This rock was taken from Hrubá Skála in Bohemian Paradise, with volcanic sandstone pillars.
