about

Kerrera, Inner Hebrides, Scotland

Picts was the name which the Romans gave to the confederation of tribes beyond their reach north of the Forth of the Clyde, suspected to come from the lattice word pinger “to paint” suggesting they painted or tattooed their bodies. The real name they would have called themselves is sometimes cited as the Kalti or Kelti. Legend has it that the people came from Scandinavia to Norther Ireland looking for land, but the Irish sent them away to Scotland, but giving them Irish Wives. Legend also has it that due to the underground dwellings usually referred to as “Pict’s Houses” are the basis of the fairies in British folklore (MacRitchie, 1890). They themselves believed that they were the descendants of the Goddess Brigid.

The Romans identified nine major tribes after arriving in what we now k now as Scotland in AD79. The nine major tribes identified are the Caledones, Domnonii, Epidii, Vacomagi, Venicones, Taexali, Votadini, Novantae, and Selgovae. Many of these people would unite to fight the Romans in the battle of Mons Graupius in AD84. After this battle many tribes accepted the Roman occupation, but some norther tribes continued to battle. The continued attacks were costing the Romans, and in AD122 the Emperor Hadrian ordered a wall built. A continuing land to be fought over, during years of English conquest, 22 envisions by the English being sighted on wikipedia. Eventually to end up in political ‘union’ wit England in 1707. Since then two referendums on devolution in 1979 and 1997, and a devolved Scottish parliament was establish in 1999. The Scottish National Party first became the governing part of the devoted parliament in 2007, and held the first Scottish Independence referendum in 2014. After the UK referendum on Eu membership in 2016 the Scottish Parliament seek a second referendum on independence.
